I am a miami based artist of cuban heritage. As a young girl I was always surrounded by family, music and a warm home filled with colorful food. Living in Miami has influenced my color palette as a painter. This was realized when I moved to Rhode Island for university and saw a lack of light and color throughout the city of providence. Surrounded by grey skies and brick colonial buildings I found myself yearning for the light and color of sunny miami, florida. The start of my artistic career I was very much drawn to the figure and representing realism. As many young artist in search of the skill to create a perfect photo realistic painting/drawing, I now realize even then I was much more interested in the color found in skin tones and the shapes of light and shadow that were created on a face or hand. Those small details fascinated me more than the subject itself. Coming to this realization in college I began to remove the figure from my work and focus on the color and light but through the lens of exterior and interior spaces. Even though my compostitions were drawn from interior spaces around providence my palette was "miami colors" (coined by my peers).
