Batara Lubis was born in Hutagodang ( Kotanopan ) south Tapanuli,sumatra, on February 2 , 1927. He didn,t follow the lines of his ancesters as a civil service authorithy,but since his childhood was attracted to the arts,especially painting.
When he was about 25 Years old he move to Java ( Yogyakarta ),where he started to learn painting systematically from well know painters such as Sudarso, Hendra Gunawan, and Affandi.then he entered ASRI ( Indonesia Sculpture Art Academy ) in Yogyakarta , 1952.
As a fitting young painter,Batara lubis was selected to join the Afro Asia Painting Exhibition to promote the Afro Asia confrence in Bandung 1955.following this,Batara Lubis was selected to join the Asian young Painters Exhibition in Tokyo and Osaka ( Japan ), BNKN Exhibition ( Jakarta ), the Revolving exhibition in Cekoslowakia, Berlin , Asutria , The Asian Games exhibition in Fukuoka ( Japan ),exhibition of Affandi Museum ( Yogyakarta ). He organised an exhibition of his own works Bentara Budaya ( Yogyakarta ),an exhibition of Balai Budaya ( Jakarta ), and also one sponsored by the french Culture Centre ( Jakarta ).
He cooperated with the other Yogyakarta Artist to Construct Tugu Muda ( the youth Monument ) of Semarang,made : a relief and mozaic of Ambarukmo Pelace Hotel ( Yogyakarta ),Dewan kesenian Jakarta , Syed Kechik Foundation ( Kuala Lumpur ) , The Islamic Caligraphic Museum ( Banda Aceh ), The Asia Foundation ( Jakarta ), Gedung Agung ( Yogyakarta ) , , the Nusantara Anthropology Museum ( Warsawa ) , Wisma Seni Nasional ( Jakarta ), Fatahillah Museum ( Jakarta ) , Gallery Nasional ( Jakarta ) , Museum Affandi ( Yogyakarta ),
Clair Holt ( Cornell University, U.S.A ) in his book analysing Indonesian Sculpture didn’t forget to describe him as an Indonesian painter.we also find his works in the Indonesian painting art collection of Soekarno ( the first President Of Indonesia ) and in collection of Mr Adam Malik. Bata
