About me
I am very much a painter interested in abstraction and mark making, mostly working with a limited and monochrome palette on a large scale. In my most recent paintings I developed a stripped back style. This however comes from a chaotic and instinctive process, which involves pulling apart and reassembling source material, both manually and occasionally digitally.
Using such thick and unforgiving house gloss paint, my technique and surface is very direct with the heavily primed white canvas elevating every mark. The introduction of an airbrush has helped bring an added sense of immediacy and unpredictability, which contrasts the more methodical brush strokes when using the gloss.
My visual inspiration is largely textured and gestural, however is fairly open ended, as the intention is to take an essence of something and craft it into a new language of my own. This is done with in a studio-based practise involving drawing, painting and scanning with the idea of extracting and magnifying constantly.
My work is as much about the denial of gesture as it is a celebration of gesture. Having a clean finished aesthetic I like to have a few tricks and games within the paintings, be it the sudden ruptures in movement or variations in line and colour.
I’m lead to abstraction due to the openness and freedom it unequivocally gives the viewer and me. As I believe there is something in the desire for not having answers and leaving abstract things as there names states … abstract.
