This work depicts the brutal rape and mutilation of Lavinia in Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus. In the play, Lavinia is raped by two men, then had her tongue and hands cut off. The mutilation prevented her from reporting her assault – forcing her to keep quiet about her rape. Later, Lavinia is considered a humiliation because she was raped and is killed in the end. Not being able to talk about, report, or get help for being sexually assaulted is a very real issue for modern women and girls. As a result, while rape is an extremely common crime, it is severely underreported in today’s society.
