Endangerment to the Mandala

Endangerment to the Mandala

Description

As a society, more often than not, we fail to recognize our obligation to help animals against our machines to destroy habitats for our lucrative, yet selfish plans. Charles Darwin may have believed that the survival of the fittest only strengthens our world, but this ancient concept must be abandoned – especially in the case of animals. While natural causes have been detrimental to animal conservation, humans must also be held just as responsible. As we continue to ignore our responsibilities, the endangered species list will not only become longer, but also lead to extinction. Amongst the 16”x20” canvases are five endangered animal species*. The animals are depicted in oil paint with detailed features, especially in their eyes. I solely focus on the endangered animal’s head. This allows the viewer to look straight into the animal’s eyes. The eye contact can create an empathetic, intimate experience. The background colors are primarily red, orange, and yellow in order to symbolize a torch’s flame. Historically in Ancient Greece, when a torch is upright, it represents eternal world peace, however when reversed it indicates that death is near. In my art, there is a circular motion to show the movement of the torch to show the delicate state of endangered species. Within the painting, the animal is juxtaposed against vibrant, contrasted backgrounds. I create a variety of stylistic backgrounds for each piece. The central point of the painting, there is the animal’s head. The piece itself is my twist on the mandala. All the paintings are on top of a mandala tapestry created with markers. The mandala originates from India. It is made in a circular diagram in order to convey the necessity to unify. The mandala has a quite methodical structure. Traditionally, the center of the mandala is usually consecrated to a deity. In my series, while there is no connection to religious figures, the center holds the utmost important – animals rather than gods are at the center point. I advocate for people to take action in conservation and recognize animals. Animals are truly remarkable creatures who hold more compassion than any other living being. Animals are the sacred ones. The Five Endangered Animal Species*: Critically Endangered: Amur Leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis), Javan Rhino (Rhinoceros sondaicus, South China Tiger (Panthera tigris amoyensis). Endangered: Giant Panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) Vulnerable: African Elephant (Loxodonta africana)
