Yuri was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (or PCOS) at the age of 16. It is a condition where a woman's sex hormones are out of balance, causing complications in the menstrual cycle and fertility. It is also linked to depression and the development of more masculine characteristics.
"Infertility" is a self-reflective series that contemplates on the artist's own barrenness. It questions what it means to be a woman in a society that puts so much emphasis on the traditional view of femininity and motherhood. The artist uses a digital scanner instead of a camera because she felt it more apt as it mimics the action of scanning through a mirror when looking at your reflection. Throughout the series, the artist uses her own body and various objects that are often used as metaphors for femininity and infertility.
The creation of the series became all the more important because of a restraining order imposed on the distribution of birth control by the Philippine Government, an action that she believes is anti-choice and anti-poor. "The Pill" also aids in regulating the menstrual cycle of women suffering from PCOS.
