my breasts developing and my hips widening in puberty are praised as a sign of womanhood, but the acne and body hair developing at the same time are shamed as a sign of dirtiness, messiness. I am asked to revert back to how I was in childhood – to strip my body clean of the grizzly details that make grown men uncomfortable. why are the hairs that grow naturally from my skin a mark of rebellion and not biology? why is my femininity questioned when it is just another part of becoming a woman?
