Since I majored in Oriental painting and design, I spent days agonizing over how to interpret traditional beauty in a modern way.
In the meantime, I found that pop art, which is a genre communicating with the public actively in contemporary art, is similar to Korea folk painting, which was popular among the common people in the past.
So I created a new genre called folk pop painting.
My work is largely divided into two directions. The first is the quest for relationship between fruit and youth that has been working for a long time.
The piece I created is full of yellow colored tropical fruits. The fruits seem delicious or sweet but at the same time are somewhat sour. I express 'The Youth', which is a golden age in life, through the relationship between fruit and the human figure. I specifically chose woman as models who were famous and popular but also who experienced a lot of pain in their life. I feel 'The Youth' from those who exhibit extremism in their life, such as Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn. I find 'The Youth' in them.
The yellow color seems bright but at the same time this color expresses pain and madness. It is very similar with our youth which is a time of transition between childhood and adulthood. The fruit also serves as a metaphor of social and personal achievements. It can likewise represent the youth who are going through the dualistic freshness and hopelessness of youth. Much as we call the greatest moments in time golden ages, I call our youth a yellow age as a consolation and ode to 'The Youth'
In the new works, more and more traditional elements were added and the yellow fruits are merged into a peach that appeared frequently in Korean folk paintings. In folk paintings, peaches mean youth and longevity. The waves are also elements that appear in folk paintings, which means the fears and trials of youth, and peaches are Bumping into each other and floating around the ocean. Peach cat is my self-portrait and represents the youth who is confused about its identity and the feeling of anxiety that I experienced in my life as an immigrant overseas for several years. I always feel as a stranger even in Korea.
The base of the gradient background color where two or more colors meet is the expression of confusion.
Peach cat seeks identity by being in various places or being a person that I admired.
