Venus of Belleville-Ville

Venus of Belleville-Ville

This piece has a couple of layers to talk about. It's a parody of Manet's Olympia, which has been historically recreated in many different forms. Olympia was avant garde because Manet had her, this alleged expensive, primed prostitute, engage the viewer with a direct gaze. It's an iconic piece because of its controversy.

I have an improv show I perform in monthly called Belleville-Ville. An improvised longform improv dramedy that's character driven. I met my partner on stage over four years ago performing in this show. The Olympia in the bed is my sweetheart, as his character 'Buddy Palamine' in our show. The mechanic shaking his cloth-filled fist is our friend Tony, who plays Mallard, the owner of Trudeau Motors in our 70's era small town setting.

This piece is entirely whimsical and strange for anyone who hasn't seen our show, but I think therein lies a great charm, because it invites the viewer in to question who these people are.

This is only a small example of my work. Check me out on Instagram. @Rachelsvparry
